The first plenary meeting of ISO/IEC JTC 5 (Joint Technical Committee 5 of the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission) was held in Berlin, Germany, from 7 to 9 September 2026. Hosted by Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), the meeting brought together 204 delegates from 28 countries. As the national mirror organization for ISO/IEC JTC 5, GS1 China organized a delegation of 10 Chinese experts to attend the meeting.

ISO/IEC JTC 5 was officially established in March 2026, with its secretariat hosted by DIN. The committee is responsible for standardization in the field of Digital Product Passport (DPP), aiming to facilitate the flow and interoperability of product information across global supply chains and enable the circular economy and sustainable development. As the committee’s inaugural plenary session, the meeting confirmed the committee’s name, defined its standardization scope and organizational structure, and reviewed ongoing and planned work items.

The Chinese delegation attended the entire meeting and participated in depth in all agenda discussions, putting forward Chinese proposals. The meeting endorsed China’s proposal to establish Working Group 1 to develop standards for DPP terminology, overview and fundamental principles. The Chinese delegation nominated five Chinese experts to serve as external liaison representatives for ISO/IEC JTC 5. Chinese experts also shared with the participants the country’s planned New Work Item Proposal (NWIP) titled Reference Architecture and General Requirements for DPP Trust and Security.

The autumn 2027 plenary meeting of ISO/IEC JTC 5 is planned to be held in Jinan, China.
